SPEAKER_04Hi.
SPEAKER_08Hey, today today we've got a very special episode because we are talking about designing and building a life and a career. And we have a local hometown hero joining us. But before we get to that, I want to pay some bills. A huge shout out to one of our 10x partners, Elite Roofing Professionals, for helping to make this weekly podcast possible. And so that's right, we've got Carloville's own Kyle Dixon in the studio today. Kyle is the youngest of three brothers, really. Yep. And a cavalier great. And we are absolutely thrilled to say he recently signed with the New England Patriots. Listen at it. You let him do sell. Perfect.
SPEAKER_04It's so exciting. And you know, Kyle, I just I'm so happy. Look, look, I'm I'm throwing around. Yeah, I do.
SPEAKER_08Pushing the mic around.
SPEAKER_04But I'm so excited you're here. Really, when I found out you were going back to football, I was like, whoa, awesome. And then I find out you're going to the New England Patriots. I'm like, man. But full disclosure, guys, I know KD, which you're gonna hear us refer to him as KD.
SPEAKER_08KD, is that what you're hoping? Like all the announcers, like KD, KD 83.
SPEAKER_04I mean, listen to that. That's his number.
SPEAKER_08KD 83.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Sweet.
SPEAKER_08Could be something.
SPEAKER_04Right. But anyway, you guys, so my dad was his coach in high school. Baseball and football. Assistant. Right. So obsessed with you your whole life. I mean, basically, my dad's favorite son is sitting right here.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I'm the honorary. I'm the honorary. But then when we find out that you were just working out at the CHS turf in the weight room, like, thank you so much for letting me come out and video you.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_04To watch you do that. And then to also watch you with the kids and especially Luca. You know, I want he was really, wasn't he trying to be super cool?
SPEAKER_05Oh, he was.
SPEAKER_04My own son. But thank you so much, Kyle. So humblest guy. We can't wait to find out how you got to where you are today, and we'll go ahead and get started. Dig in.
SPEAKER_08Let's do it. Let's do it. That's you, KBB. You're first. See? See, I give she wanted the reins, right? She was like, I'll write the script. I've got this. I've got it, right? So then she looks at me to take over.
SPEAKER_04It's like, I did. I did. You're up. Look, I was like, okay, one after the other. Okay.
SPEAKER_08Let's see. Your name is Caitlin. My name is Chris. And and this is KD83 over here. We're good.
SPEAKER_04Guy, look at all this. All the cuz here. KKC. Could be a band. Poor Kyle. So sorry. Okay. So being from Carlinville, a small town anywhere, how do you feel like this community, this school, the coaches shaped your work ethic?
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I think that's kind of the embodiment of this town, especially growing up in sports around here. That's how it was. You don't complain, you just put your head down and work hard. So that's kind of a testament to not only the coaches, but the guys I played with throughout high school growing up. And then just my family, too. Everyone in my family was very, very much ingrained in sports. My cousin, for example, set a really good example for us. He swam at Virginia Tech.
SPEAKER_02Oh, wow.
SPEAKER_05And he swam in the Olympic trials as well. So just being able to see what different people have done. Yeah. Um genetics maybe. Yeah, maybe a little bit of a genetics, yeah. Yeah. But that that definitely plays a role in how you go about your work and the mindset and got me to where I'm at.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because both your parents, I feel like, are very health and fitness oriented and competitive. And the brothers that I know too. But I didn't know that about the cousin genetics, man.
SPEAKER_08And and you are a CHS graduate of what year? 19, 2019. 2019.
SPEAKER_04I'm thinking 19. I'm waiting for the what's after the 19.
SPEAKER_08It's okay. It's okay, Caitlin. It's all right. So your college journey is incredibly unique, right? Uh you started out pitching in college baseball. Yeah, so when when Caitlin said you're back to football, so yeah, yeah. Tell us about that journey in the college there.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. So I guess it kind of starts when I was in my junior high school. I was getting recruited for both baseball and football. Right. And then uh I started to get more offers for baseball at the division one level. So at that point I thought that baseball would be my path. Sure. So I went through my freshman year, had a pretty good freshman year, but that was the COVID year, so it got cut short. Yeah. Um came back the next year, had a pretty good fall, and then go to the spring. It was about a month before the season started in the spring. I kind of tweaked my shoulder. So I was out for probably the next month, two months. You're like, you're not pitching. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So I came back and I wasn't throwing as many strikes, which is pretty important for a pitcher.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_05It might be up there with other things, yeah. Kind of important. So I ended up only pitching, I think it was like two innings that year. Really? Oh wow. Which is shoot, probably at least a quarter as many I pitched the year before. And doesn't look good on stats, doesn't it? No. No. So ended up finishing my year there at SIU Carbondale. Yep. Uh got my scholarship cut after that season. So transferred to Southern Illinois, Edwardsville after that. Right. And closer to home. Yeah. Had a okay season there. It wasn't anything crazy. Pitched a little bit better, got way more innings. And then I transferred to Georgia Gwinnett College. And that is where? That is northeast of Atlanta in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
SPEAKER_04See, and I didn't know about this one. Okay.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. So I went there and like I really enjoyed it, but it was kind of the same deal as my sophomore year. Wasn't throwing as many strikes, didn't pitch a ton. So I went out, finished summer ball in California, and then I was basically done. I was just gonna be done playing, and I was working uh a sales job for a couple months. Really? Yeah. So I was working a sales job for a couple months, and I was like, you know what? Like I've got eligibility left. Like I wanted to play football in college. Like, why so I decided to start trying to get recruited for football? And uh it's funny, I was actually close to going to this division two school in Missouri, but they wanted me to play linebacker. The only issue was that was at NCAA school, so I would have been able to play for two semesters. Right. So I was like, I don't know. I don't know if I really just want to play for one year and be done. Right.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So I was like, okay, I've got to go to the NIA level. Well, lucky enough, one of my good friends, Jordan Bressler, he was actually coached there. Right. Okay. So I messaged him, like, hey man, trying to get recruited. Long story short, ended up going there. And uh yeah, a couple pretty good years and apparently a couple good years, right? Yeah. Someone saw you. Uh-huh. And then uh Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So this was at Georgia?
SPEAKER_05So that was at Culver.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's what I thought. Okay, that's what I was just making sure we're on the the same page here. And also, who what else happened at Culver? Something else pretty big happened.
SPEAKER_05I I found my wife at Culver. No, it's a really funny story though, because I was on my visit there and I'm being walked around through the gym, and she was uh a GA for the girls' basketball team at the time. Yeah, yep. She was walking by doing the laundry for the team, and I said to uh to my buddy Jordan, I was like, Who's that? And he's like, Oh, she's GM. Oh my gosh, that's so cute. He's like, but she's got a boyfriend right now. I was like, all right, whatever. Yeah, but they're not married. Oh, wait, sorry. That was my uh technicality. So then I uh eventually caught Wayne that uh she was single and then went up and talked to her, and the rest is history.
SPEAKER_04Look at him, he's like, Yeah, I went up there and I talked to her. But you know, it's so cool. It it happened all that timeline, like really God and for a reason.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, absolutely. And so you were like, this and baseball really. I mean, so if your baseball really would have picked up and you would have played more than two innings at one season or pitch more, you know what I mean? You might not have met a different path, you never might not met. It's it's amazing, and you wouldn't have that drive or desire, like, I want to try football, right? So at Culver Stockton, you didn't just play, you dominated, right? You became the first wide receiver in school history to have two 1,000 yard seasons. Man, and you earned I didn't know that either. You earned the name, the NAIA all-American first team. Yep. And did you ever expect to have that level of success just coming in at the age you were at, because you were older than most of the players, right? Mm-hmm. What talk to us about that a little bit?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I really didn't have a lot of expectations coming in. Like I thought I could do pretty well. Just just scratching an inch.
SPEAKER_08Right.
SPEAKER_05Is that I mean, is that what kind of what it was? More or less, yeah.
SPEAKER_08You weren't looking for a career.
SPEAKER_05No, and it's funny because my coach, when he was trying to recruit me, he was talking about, oh yeah, we'll be able to get NFL scouts out to practice, blah, blah. I'm like, okay, cool. Like I'm not putting him on your radar. No, not at all. I'm like, that's awesome, but I'm not really thinking about playing in the NFL.
SPEAKER_03And uh Okay, cool.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. So it it really wasn't. I definitely thought that I could do well. Right. I thought I could perform well, but I really didn't know how much because I didn't know what it would be like at the college level versus the high school level. Right. Right. But very quickly I kind of realized that you know I had the potential to be pretty good. Didn't know how good. Right. Who who first saw that in you? You know what I mean? At the at the college level that, hey, you could go. I think it was uh our head coach, uh Coach Sally, because uh it was in after my first year there, it was in maybe March or April. Um, he called me one day and he's like, Hey man, the the Browns and Vikings want to meet you in St. Louis. He's like, Do you want to do it? I'm like, I mean, yeah, of course. So yeah, who would say no thanks?
SPEAKER_03I'm busy.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, I've got other things going on. So even then, like, I think he believed more than I did at the time.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05Because even at that point, we're going into the next season, and he's talking about that I have a really good shot and things like that. And I'm like, okay, like, is he blowing smoke or is this real? Uh and then as we get through that fall, just more and more scouts kept coming through to talk to me. So I was like, okay, there might be a pretty good shot here to be able to uh to make a run at that. Right. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_04So how do this I mean, there's so many like colleges obviously around, like how do the scouts do they just is there a certain day that they like come to each school, or do you know when they're there? Are they watching you on video?
SPEAKER_08Yeah. So someone's submitting recording somewhere to I didn't know how that worked.
SPEAKER_05Because two years before I got there, one of actually my patriot teammates, Andrew Rupic, he played at Culver. So my coach had some connections because of scouts going through going through the draft process.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_05So he was talking to scouts, and then some of them would come individually leading up, but a lot of them came, I forget when it was throughout the season, but I guess Mizzou only had one day where they would let scouts come to see them. Sure. So a lot of the scouts were in the area this specific week, and that's when a ton of them came through and came to talk to me. Right. So it's kind of a little bit of mix of different things, but it definitely helped uh Coach Sally having those connections get people to watch and notice a little bit, whereas otherwise probably wouldn't have. Right. It's relationships. It is without a doubt.
SPEAKER_08It's who you know, it's who you know that just goes. But spotting that in you and going, I see something here, right? We need to we need to pursue that. Yeah. So did you go to St. Louis by yourself or did your coach meet you there, or did like on your own?
SPEAKER_05No, I was I went up to to Culver and then uh met with our coach and then our offensive coordinator and then our tight end coach, and then my buddy Jordan, and then we all drove down there together to go there. And that was really more just like kind of introductory thing. They're getting weight, things like that, just kind of basic information from me.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_05So they could enter me into this kind of like scouting portal for the NFL. Sure. Okay. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_05So you make the trip.
SPEAKER_04So then so that the the Browns and the Vikings, do you talk to the actual coaches or is it agents that is it agent to agent?
SPEAKER_05I just I didn't know because the deeper you get, at least for me, the deeper I got into like the draft process. Um, I was talking more and more, less to scouts and more to like position coaches.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_05Or they have what they call like quality control guys. Right. Um the coaches have people out there that know what their coaches are looking for.
SPEAKER_04I mean, that's when you probably really thought. Exactly.
SPEAKER_05So it's kind of like a line of different interviews, more or less, that you've got to work through. Um, and then the very closer you get, you start talking to like your receivers' coaches and things like that. In some cases, head coaches, like when I was in Indianapolis, I met with their head coach briefly, and then Coach Ray Bull, I talked to him briefly over the phone. Right. And who's that?
SPEAKER_04Who's that coach?
SPEAKER_05That's our Patriots coach.
SPEAKER_04Okay, okay. I'm glad to see. I'm glad you say this.
SPEAKER_05Guys, sorry.
SPEAKER_04So Indianapolis, hold on, let me just make sure that's the Colts.
SPEAKER_08I'm sorry. I apologize. They're my they were my favorite team until Patrick. There we go.
SPEAKER_04Well, whose else favorite? Wasn't there weren't they your favorite team?
SPEAKER_05Um throughout the throughout the draft process, like I really thought that they were gonna be the one. Um they had shown the most interest until the Patriots came in. Uh I wouldn't say late, but they uh came on very strong at the end. Oh, I love that. So it was kind of one of those things to where they're a sleeper team. They're like, yeah, we'll see what's out there.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So the Colts were kind of showing the most interest, and the Patriots started to kind of take that over. Yeah. And then yeah, ultimately went with the Patriots.
SPEAKER_08So do you do you think do you think that that was uh a Patriots move as in let's just not show interest to see how cheap we can get him? I mean, is that I mean, is that how the process works?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, how does that how does it work?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so I do know that some teams, just with talking with my agent, that some teams will do that is where they'll kind of fly under the radar until like the very end. Yeah. Make you sweat it out. Mm-hmm. So that way, you know, it's kind of like a competition with the league where if I've got all 32 teams that are interested, well then you know that's the value goes up. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So in that case, it kind of lessens that blow for the teams. Right. So that's why some teams will kind of fly under the radar until like the very end. Because shoot, I up until my pro day and after my pro day, I hadn't really talked to the Patriots much at all.
SPEAKER_04What's what do you mean by pro day?
SPEAKER_05So that's when I I went to Mizzou for my pro day, and I had to go, it's essentially like the combine.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Yes. And you did so good.
SPEAKER_05Had a really good performance there. That really helped out a ton because a lot of it for me was hinging on how I did at the pro day.
SPEAKER_04Right. And then so when was that?
SPEAKER_05That was the end of March. This year. Yep.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I knew it was like it was of recent. But the Patriots, you know, they were, but let's go back a little bit. They were trying to get him first. And didn't you say hold on or something?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, what let's tell us about that.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_05So the way it works is like, especially when as you get closer to draft day. So like on the draft day, like teams will try to get you to commit, or even like days before, teams will try to get you to commit to them. Right. If you're gonna be a guy that's like undrafted. So they'll try to sell you on that. Okay, okay. Uh things like that. So yeah, there's multiple different teams that were trying to get me to commit beforehand.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_08So they were trying to play you as like, hey, you're not gonna get drafted. You might as well sign with us. Let's go. Right. Don't say no, I I get it. It's it's a game. Yeah. It it it's a mental game, right? I'm sure you were probably like, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Were you stressing a little bit? I wouldn't say I was stressing. It was just uh it was a very hectic time, just having so many conversations. Like it's a lot like college recruiting, but like on steroids. Trying to keep them all straight.
SPEAKER_04Steroids, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Like there's just so many conversations happen. KD is not on steroids. No.
SPEAKER_04It was just a phrase, guys.
SPEAKER_08Right, just making sure we all get that clear, you're right.
SPEAKER_04So, all right.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so it's just a ton of conversations in a very short time with a bunch of different people, bunch of different teams. So it's very hectic while at the same time, you're still trying to stay in shape, work out.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, still your daily routine, right?
SPEAKER_05Yeah. So I mean, speaking of, it was a lot.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we need to talk. Let's talk about your daily routine. What about your workouts?
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Your nutrition. I would say right now, during this period, it's a little bit less uh intensive. Or just conditioning, staying in tune. So leading up to the season and like going into training camp, obviously we're gonna be there for the next, I don't know, six, eight months. Starting next week, right? Or we next Saturday. Week from the Saturday you report.
SPEAKER_04He's reporting in.
SPEAKER_05So right now it's more just working on the things that you need to work on. So, and like you said, conditioning. Right. So we're lifting four or five days a week. Right. And then we've got conditioning two, three days a week to build up. We've got a conditioning test when we go back. Sure. And then uh yeah. Outside of that, I'm going over to a facility in Chesterfield to work with a receiver's coach a couple days a week. Just fine-tuning some footwork, things like that. That's Chestfield, Missouri for small town folks, not Chester, Illinois. Yeah.
SPEAKER_08I didn't know they had that facility in Chester Patch. I just want to clarify for our followers and listeners there, right? Right.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04Far different. But you know, and Kyle had said when he I talked to him at the weight room, like they provide a list of like workouts and then position-specific workouts too. But one thing he said that I want everybody to hear, he doesn't try to focus on lifting, lifting heavy. It's more about functional movement.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. Especially as a receiver. I mean, you're gonna be you've got to be fast, you've got to be coordinated, you gotta be able to be fluid.
SPEAKER_04But look, he's he's muscle.
SPEAKER_08You lose that. Yeah. Yeah. Speaking of ball, do you follow baseball? A little bit, yeah. Yeah. Do you know who Kyle Farnsworth is? Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_08So Kyle Farnsworth, uh, I was I was the 10x coach at the shoes legends game.
SPEAKER_04In Springfield, you know, the horse.
SPEAKER_08Jason Israelhausen and Ray Langford on my team, and then the Cubs team had Kyle Farnsworth and some others. So this this is exactly the example of why he doesn't want to bulk up on the show.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah, I forgot that picture that you're gonna, yeah.
SPEAKER_08So this is Kyle that night. Good lord. Yeah, he's into weightlifting now competitions.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, he's a bodybuild.
SPEAKER_08And he was griping about, man, couldn't you got me a bigger jersey? He's like, dude, that's the biggest jersey we get. And he was out there still throwing fast pitches against my players, right?
SPEAKER_03I mean, this could be interesting.
SPEAKER_08But before the game, they had him in front of our dugout warming up. It's like, come on, guys, get him out of here. It was a fun game, right?
SPEAKER_02It's yeah, it's a it's a get him out of here. Yeah.
SPEAKER_08And so when he got up in the fourth inning to start pitching, my guys were like, oh shit, oh shit. Because we were up seven to four, or seven to three at that point. Yeah. Like we're kicking Cubs ass. Cards were sorry, Cubs fans. So anyway, yeah. And my guys were like, Oh shit. Our first four batters at bat made base. Our fourth one did it the he called it in fly our infield pop fly and called him out, even though the first baseman dropped it in the outfield. I'm like, Come on, man. Let's see, but anyway.
SPEAKER_04I'm surprised you didn't go out there and there was like a mob
SPEAKER_08We end up winning eleven to four. There we go. So yeah. Cubs out there. Doesn't matter. I didn't mean to take away. But that Caitlin is why he doesn't bulk up. No. Because he doesn't want to look like Kyle Tony.
SPEAKER_04And I don't and it's not healthy. And he they even have like nutri you said dietitians or nutritionists. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Nutritionists.
SPEAKER_04I love that. And you said you really just want to focus on being healthy. And I think that kids that are listening to you need to hear that kind of stuff. Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_05It's not about bulking up and just getting older and being having to be. Yeah. No.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_05That's what you you kind of found out pretty quickly there just from talking to more of the like the veterans. Like, don't get me wrong, we're not just going in there and lifting light bullshit weight.
SPEAKER_04Well, we saw the weight in the video.
SPEAKER_05But at the same time, like we're not trying to turn ourselves into bodybuilding. You're not meeting. Right. The biggest thing is you got to be able to be out there and be healthy. And if you're out there killing yourself in the weight room, like it's going to be difficult to be able to perform, be healthy doing so.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, because the thing the thing with the the bulk weight, you have to then maintain at that level to maintain that physique. Right. Otherwise, you start losing that muscle mass, and then you're like, it's just constant up and down, it's not healthy. No.
SPEAKER_04No.
SPEAKER_08You want to get your optimum weight, strength, and maintain that. Yeah. Right.
SPEAKER_05And tweak here and there to improve your performance. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. It's kind of like a feeling out process and just figuring out like what what works best for you and kind of what makes your body feel good on a day-to-day basis. Because if you're hurt, it's going to be very difficult to stay on a team. They're going to find somebody else to come in there that's healthy and can perform or help the team in some way. You're not just losing a scholarship like you did on baseball. Right. Yeah. You're losing your job. Your job.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So you're a receiver of and how many are receivers are there?
SPEAKER_05Ooh, I think there are 11 or 12 of us right now.
SPEAKER_08Because there's there's first string, right? They call them first string. Yeah. Right. So you first team obviously won't be that. No. But you're on ready to jump in when you need to.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. Right. Mm-hmm. When someone ends up out and you're a Tom Brady situation where you're like, Brady, get your ass off the bench, get in here. Right. Right? Yeah. You're in it. Right.
SPEAKER_04Seriously. That's probably what's going to happen with the way that your life has been. Like baseball. Oh no, we'll go back to football. Oh, I I go to Culver Stockton. I meet my wife. And now I'm at the Patriots. And now someone's going to get there's there's a reason for everything, right?
SPEAKER_08And then and I can already see it in your eyes, right? I read people that you are there ready. Put me in code. I'm I'm ready. And what I'm sure the coaches are similar to me as well. They're going to see something in you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_08And they're going to be like, this kid's let's get let's get a year under his belt of the NFL atmosphere, play in the different uh stadiums because you're going to be playing in dip, you go play mile high. Yeah. It's a little bit different than playing in the streets. Oh, yeah. I never thought of that, guys. And you and you don't have that at high school football here in Cornville. Not at all. I mean, no offense. I was born here, so I can say that I can say that. But that those those coaches, right, are going to say, like, this kid's got it. Let's get him used to the ecosystem and he's ready to fly.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I feel like you're very resilient. Like you just kind of do what you need to do.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I mean, in situations. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04That's yes, adaptive. Very adaptive. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. You just got to control what you can control. And like you said, at the end of the day, I think everything happens for a reason. You just got to trust that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And uh just like have an optimistic mindset that everything's going to work out. Yeah. That's how it's supposed to. Oh, here.
SPEAKER_04Yep.
SPEAKER_05No negativity.
SPEAKER_08Exactly. And it's the be positive.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_08And success is my duty. Yeah. You know, so anything we touch, we just want to make sure it's successful. You've got that. You've got that in you.
SPEAKER_05You you definitely have to have that too, because like, even speaking for me, I was hurt for a couple weeks. And when you're out there and you're hurt, like there's not a lot of wins you can get on the daily. Right. Right. You're not going to have to practice, you're not doing much. So just being able to maintain that mindset versus playing victim or poor me. Yeah. And kind of letting that, you know, take a few steps back for yourself. Whereas, like, the best thing you can do in that situation is get yourself healthy as quick as possible. And then when you're healthy, perform and as best you can and let the chips fall where they will.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_05It's a mindset thing, right?
SPEAKER_08Really is until your mindset is where it needs to be. Right? You're there, you're committed. And hey, I've got one for you. All right. No negativity, man.
SPEAKER_04Just take that. Oh, yeah. That's that's totally KD.
SPEAKER_08No, that's that's definitely. And let's make sure you put it on right. Yeah, you put it on where you can read it. Yeah. Not other people.
SPEAKER_04Of course, K. It's for your mind.
SPEAKER_08It's for you, not other people, right? And that's that's what it's about. So no, that's awesome.
SPEAKER_04So you're getting ready for training camp next week. And then when is the first game?
SPEAKER_05So our first game is the second week of August. Our first preseason game. Oh my god. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Soon, Kyle.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So that one will be what? Shoot, probably in about a month from now. Yeah. Month and a week, maybe.
SPEAKER_04So preseason game, like what that's it doesn't count towards count towards the overall. When is the first game real game?
SPEAKER_05That would be the first weekend of September.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04Where what who are you playing?
SPEAKER_05Seattle. We're out in Seattle.
SPEAKER_04Oh, see?
SPEAKER_05That'll be the rematch of the Super Bowl.
SPEAKER_04My God, Kyle. Like, okay, so tell me, I just have to ask. Like, when you first like walked into that Patriot Stadium, like, have you been there so far?
SPEAKER_08Yeah. Okay. I just didn't know if Oh, sorry. If where that's so okay, set the stage.
SPEAKER_04What did you really think?
SPEAKER_05I mean, it was really cool, but uh at the same time, like it's one of those things to where you gotta kind of just accept it as like this is just what it is, not that it be like too big, like it's where you're at, and you know, it's I kind of look at it as like it's just like another job for you, you know? And you're just gonna he you it's almost like you're gonna nerves can get to you.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_08Yes, yeah, sure. Because it's a little bigger than the Culver Stockton stadium, right? Yeah, definitely. Yeah, and definitely a lot bigger than Carlville High School. Just a little bit because they didn't have they didn't have the turf when you were playing. No playing on grass. Yeah, we played on grass. Yeah, turf. And you're like, damn it, I could have been that much better.
SPEAKER_04What?
SPEAKER_08I didn't I've just came in five. Well, I sure should know.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I thought for sure, boy, how old are you, Kyle?
SPEAKER_08He graduated in 1925. 25.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well, you probably know Blake, our our elite roofing, Blake Middleton from Gillespie.
SPEAKER_08Glitchfield. Well, yeah, he'd lived in Gillespie. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Because I think he played football.
SPEAKER_08He was baseball. He's baseball.
SPEAKER_04I had to throw Blake in there first because I was thinking of like the 25. Okay.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, Blake's 27 now.
SPEAKER_04Oh, okay. Missed that. That's all right. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_08That's all right.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. He's crushing it. So you were crushing it.
SPEAKER_04Exactly.
SPEAKER_0810Xing everything. That's a good thing. I mean, yeah, this is I have I have this line here. This is I talk to our mentees because I coach business coach and stuff. Right. It's Grant Cardone's 13 rules of success.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_08Number one is show up.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_08You got to show up to blow up. Yeah. Right. Number two is the 100% philosophy, commit.
SPEAKER_04Does it commit?
SPEAKER_08You're there. Number three is give, give, give. Just give it a giving to us today. Giving back to the community. Yeah. Given given everything of you, right? Yeah. Four is focus on your dreams, which is maybe goals, targets, whatever that is. Yeah. Speaking of which, what what is your have you set a personal goal? Like as a patriot?
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I mean, I I think Or in the NFL career. Let's go. Well, I wouldn't say necessarily like a career goal yet. I like to look more in like a yearly basis, I guess. Yep. Yep. Um, but for me, it's really just wanting to make the active roster this year and like get out there on the field during the regular season.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Um, I think that that's very possible to happen. Like, there's a guy, very similar situation to me last year, who's another receiver on our team, F D and Chisholm, to where um he got signed as well, and he went out there and they had some injuries and he ended up getting to play and he played in some playoff games, actually. But he's a guy who's a really good example of someone to kind of model yourself after because one, just like an overall great dude, like great teammate, willing to do anything for anybody else. But two, just his mindset of like one, obviously how hard he works, but two, he's just like overly positive about everything. Yeah. Um, and it's like very infectious, and I think it's no question kind of where he's landed himself on this team and where he's gonna go with just his overall attitude and mindset that he has. No, that's perfect.
SPEAKER_04That's nice to have somebody like that on the team, Kyle, that you can kind of you know be friends with the other.
SPEAKER_08Active roster, play at least one game. Yeah, right. Even if it's one play, because then you were in this season playing the 26-27 season. Yeah. No, that's awesome.
SPEAKER_04I'll be tuning in.
SPEAKER_08Well, back to number five, which is right, you're right in tune with is exercise to take care of your energy unit, right? Yeah, take care of it, your your toast, right? Oh, yeah. Number six is fuel. Food is fuel, right? What you put in your body is gonna determine what energy you've got to put out there.
SPEAKER_04What's your favorite cheat meal?
SPEAKER_08Pizza for sure. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_04What kind?
SPEAKER_08Probably just a basic sausage pizza. Oh, there you go. There you go. All right. All right. Number seven is change your thoughts and attitude, right? Yeah. Like we talked about mindset, right? And and because what you think is what you say, and what you say is ultimately what people know you by. No doubt. Right. And so you've got to be clean all the way through.
SPEAKER_04Especially in his position.
SPEAKER_08And this kind of plays to you too. Number eight is the more you learn, the more you earn. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_08So true. You know, the more you learn about the NFL ecosystem, you know, you already, you're already a good team member, right? Teammate, right? You're you're there. So, but become more valuable, right?
SPEAKER_04There's always something you can learn.
SPEAKER_08And number nine, number nine kind of falls on this. Number eight is which is take responsibility for all results. Yeah. Good or bad. Take it on the chin, right? You got a good square chin. Yeah. You know, if it's bad, take it, right? If it's good, give yourself, it's okay to give yourself credit. It's like, man, I kicked ass out there, right?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it is.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. Yeah. And number 10 is always move forward, right? Learn from the shit in the in the rearview mirror, but focus forward and always move forward. Number 11 is the prosperity attitude. Like there's an abundance of everything out there. Who's got my money? Grant Cardone's favorite, who's got my money?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that is him.
SPEAKER_08But and it's not just money, right?
SPEAKER_04But you know, who's the prosperity of everything?
SPEAKER_08For sure. Opportunities is key. And number 12 is consistency, which you've got that.
SPEAKER_04100%.
SPEAKER_08Your daily workouts, your daily routines, your daily intake of food, right? All of that. And then number 13 is the key one is go for failure. Yeah. You know what I mean? Yeah, it's the quickest way to learn. Exactly. Fail, get up, learn, do it again. Number one, show up. Just repeat the cycle. So yeah, it's amazing.
SPEAKER_04He is a model of the 13 role. Grant.
SPEAKER_08Next time I talk to Grant, I'm like, Grant, KD83, the Patriots, buddy.
SPEAKER_04Well, just send it. This is the model of your thing.
SPEAKER_08If you're Grant, I'll hook you up. We'll go up to a game. We'll sit in the skybox. We'll be all right.
SPEAKER_04I want to sit in the front row. Okay. Do they have cheerleaders? Do you know?
SPEAKER_05Here we go. I would assume so. Patriots have cheerleaders. All teams have cheerleaders.
SPEAKER_04But you know, we almost only talk about DCC. Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.
SPEAKER_08That's the only thing you want to talk about about Dallas is their cheerleaders comments. Exactly.
SPEAKER_04Wait, who is the Patriots?
SPEAKER_05So is the Seahawks the rival still, or is it um No, I would say it's probably more so like the Bills. But uh given that we just lost a Super Bowl to the Seahawks, I'm sure that's gonna be a pretty intense game.
SPEAKER_04I like that they did that.
SPEAKER_08They typically do. Yeah. Oh, I didn't know. They typically will do that just for that hype of the start of the season. Right. You know, you end on the Super Bowl and then you bring it back to say, hey, was it a fluke? Or no? Oh, okay. They are who they are, they need to be.
SPEAKER_02They are who they are.
SPEAKER_08Everywhere you are. And I want to I want to circle back if I can. So during that whole process, I'm going back to the the drafting and the signing and talking to the different teams and stuff. At what point did you pull in someone to say, man, I can't keep all this shit straight. I need help. Is it your parents? Is it at what point did you pull someone in and say, I need help?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I wouldn't say there was a moment where I'm like, I need help. I think it was just more of like having constant communication like with my wife, um, my brothers. You were already married. You got married when? Actually, we got married a week ago or two weeks ago. Gotcha. So she wasn't your wife when you're going through the draft process. So no. So um talking throughout that and just talking through things and having people to kind of just vent to about it. Sure. Not necessarily those like bad things, it was just telling them and kind of getting that mental load off of the stuff. So you're showing up by yourself with these things then. Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Okay. My agent too, him and then. When did you get an agent? Okay, so that's kind of where I was getting to. When did you get an agent? Like that was this is getting real. I need an agent to make sure I'm not getting hosed or I'm on the right path. I'm not gonna say something wrong.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that was right after the season ended in November, is whenever I your college season.
SPEAKER_08Yep. Gotcha. Yep. Okay, okay. So that's that's pretty cool. And I just wanted to kind of know that.
SPEAKER_04November of 2025. Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Kyle, this all happens so fast.
SPEAKER_08Oh, it does happen fast. No, that's awesome though, right? And and again, back to you ended your baseball, it lost your scholarship. Yep. You still had eligibility, right? Did you ever think that you would be this a week and a half away from heading to training camp at the New England Patriots?
SPEAKER_05Honestly, no. I definitely believed that I was gonna be able to do like great things in my life, and I still do believe that. Oh, yeah. But uh was the NFL or the Patriots on my mind? No, definitely not. So uh I think that's just a testament to just kind of like we talked about before, just being optimistic and kind of just accepting where life goes. And as long as you're showing up as like your 10 out of 10 version of yourself every day and being a good person, then uh I think things are gonna work out for the best regardless.
SPEAKER_08What what does 10x mean to you? That term 10x, what does that mean to you? Always act like asking this sometimes. Yeah, Grant does too. 10x.
SPEAKER_05What does the term 10x do you mean? I don't know. I mean, right off the top of my head, it it it seems like just kind of something talking about like kind of leveling yourself up and being that person that you need to be. So I think it's something that maybe pushes you to believe that you can do things maybe that you wouldn't necessarily just right away or when you're younger think you could do.
SPEAKER_04Hire him.
SPEAKER_05So it's just kind of like building yourself up in that respect. But I'm not too familiar with the 10x.
SPEAKER_04But you live it, and I wasn't either. Like some people live this way, but it you you it's a way to organize it and put a name to it. Like you, you're 10x.
SPEAKER_0810 10x is you were really you were on your effort in everything you do. Ten times, yeah, right? Ten times the effort. We can't we equate it in business world of if you're if you're gonna set to make $10 million, if you're if you're like, I want to I want to make $10 million this year, gross revenue, right? Why not make it a hundred million? Right? Put in the effort because it takes the same amount of effort to think small as it does big. Yeah. And so 10x your thoughts, 10x your efforts, and the four levels of action are none, retreat, normal, and massive. If you choose to do the massive, and you set at 10, but you're like, no, let's go for a hundred, and you fall short at 700 million, you're 690 million more than where you first start out. And that's what 10x is. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04You know, that grant is just the It's that positive, optimistic mindset, too.
SPEAKER_08Because my my affirmations I tell myself every day is I'm successful, I'm wealthy, I'm happy, I'm healthy, and I have infinite potential and possibilities in my life. And that last part, infinite potential and possibilities, it's true. It's that that's an abundant mindset, prosperity mindset, right? Yeah. It's just taking that first step to make it happen, right? Showing up the committee. And you've done every bit of those things. So you are 10x and you just didn't know you're 10x, right? Yeah. And what we tell people when they're like, I mean, I am I'm 10x and I'm 10x, and it's like, well, actually, the X, the letter X is Roman numeral for 10. So it's 10 times 10. So you need 100 X. Right. And so we're like, oh shit, I need to up met efforts more. It's like exactly. Yeah. Sorry to put you on the spot for that. I just kind of like know what that is.
SPEAKER_04But he had an excellent answer.
SPEAKER_08Oh, he did. Yeah, because he's he's that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_08No, that's phenomenal.
SPEAKER_04So KD, we just thank you so much.
SPEAKER_08What's next for KD83?
SPEAKER_05Shoot. Tagline, baby. It is on what? I mean, going back uh to training camp, gonna work through that and get prepared for the first preseason game, go through the preseason, and then earn myself a spot on the team, get moved into a place out there.
SPEAKER_04That's that was gonna be my next question.
SPEAKER_05Go through and experience my first NFL season.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, let's go. Yeah. Right? You got a tunnel to run through. You've already walked through it, I'm sure. Right. They they probably watch you through it saying, Hey, you come out to the open season, right? They probably sold you on the vision. Oh, yeah. Because that's John Maxwell. I don't know if you know who John Maxwell is, but the law of the picture. If you can't picture it, you can't make it happen. So if you that's why they're building that picture for you. Yeah. And you know, yeah.
SPEAKER_04I can't wait to watch, Kyle. And you have been so fun to watch. And can't thank you enough for coming in and sharing this. Yeah, to make this with all of us. And I know so many people were like on the video, they're like, send the podcast, send the podcast. So everybody's really excited to hear.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I know. I had family members asking, well, when's it dropping? I'm like, I haven't even done it yet. July 13th, Monday, July 13th.
SPEAKER_08And I know a lot of kids at three in the morning is when it's and it can be, hey, so for all our listeners and followers, right? Uh, you can find us on any of your favorite streaming services that you like, right? We're out there at Spotify's, Apple Music, where wherever.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, Amazon.
SPEAKER_08Amazon. It's on all those things. And, you know, if you like what you've heard when you hear this today, make sure you subscribe and listen to us, right? Because we are here designing mid-Illinois one home at a time, not just in construction remodeling, but how people are designing and building their life, their career, their future. And one last thing I want from you is what does KD like to do when he's not playing football? What humbles you? What is your grounding route there?
SPEAKER_05Yeah. First and foremost, especially right now, I would say the biggest thing is uh me and my wife like to watch Love Island.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, there you go.
SPEAKER_05There it is.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Highly entertaining.
SPEAKER_05Here first, folks. Yeah. Love Island. It's got its hoax in me.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. This year is not as good as last year.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's not as good as previous years.
SPEAKER_08I watch it. I watch it.
SPEAKER_05It's not not quite as good. Some quirkiness going on. All right, go ahead. Yeah. So that, and then uh I'll play some video games with some friends or my brothers occasionally. PlayStation Xbox. What do you think? PlayStation, yeah, for sure. What do you I play uh Rocket League? Okay. Oh, that's fun. I like Rocket League a lot. GTA. Okay. Classic.
SPEAKER_08You already pre-bought the new one? I have. I have to. Did you upgrade? I did.
SPEAKER_04But you shouldn't have money in the bank now. But thirding out here is really GTA 6.
SPEAKER_05God, we've been waiting forever for it. I don't know how many years. Ten years, probably.
SPEAKER_04It's crazy.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. It should be about GTA 50 now, not fine.
SPEAKER_08So yeah. Caitlin's like, what the fuck? Are we talking about?
SPEAKER_04Oh no, Luca asked me for GTA, and I said, absolutely not.
SPEAKER_08Uh no, he doesn't need to drive around picking up women.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, maybe not yet.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Give him about five years or the last thing is just like fishing. I like fishing a little bit.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I'll go fishing a little bit.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Do you have any community involvements? I mean, you're any groups that you were part of when you were here? Honestly, no, because I'd been away for so long.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Did you get involved when you're like at college? Any of the community things? Are you pretty much like sports and I'm it?
SPEAKER_05My freshman year, we we did some community service stuff, but then after COVID hit, they weren't really like us do stuff like that anymore. Right. But we've had some like with the Patriots. We've had a couple kids' camps we've had to uh go to and work. So I was fun. Um, especially since a lot of these kids are younger, and you know, like if you were that young, like you saw someone who's in the NFL, like you drop dead, right? Right. So it really makes their day, which is pretty cool to see. Like you go in, you're like, I've got to do this for a couple hours, but then you end up having a pretty good time with them and uh just enjoying, I guess, their enjoyment because it it is truly a lot for them.
SPEAKER_04Right. And Kyle, you were so sweet on our six to six day. Like people were so thankful that you took the time to, you know, sign autographs and talk to the kids and take pictures. Like they'll remember that the rest of their lives.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, no doubt.
SPEAKER_04So I think that's community in itself, you know.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, no, it is, and that and that's awesome. You know what, Kyle? Thank you again for your time. We're gonna be watching you on Saturdays and Sundays and Thursdays, depending on when you're the Thursday night, Monday nights too, right? You got Thursday, Monday night, but there's no Saturdays until playoffs. So it's Thursday, Sunday, and Mondays, right? So we'll be glued to that TV, watching that stuff, the big screen, excited. Any parting words that you want to give the listeners.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. The biggest thing is uh really just like I talked about before, you you don't know what can happen in your life, but as long as you have an optimistic mindset and you like really push yourself, kind of like the 10X, push yourself further than you think you can, because you can push yourself further. Just do that in your life and you know things will work out for the best. And I think that uh something that maybe I wish I would have known earlier in my life or even in my college career is like failure isn't a bad thing. Nope. It failure is good. That's how you learn, that's how you're gonna be able to get better in anything in your life. So whereas a lot of people want to shy away or be scared of failure, like I think that's a valuable thing and you should look at it like that. And if you're able to do that, then it's gonna free you up to you know perform and be yourself on a day-to-day basis. Perfect. It's perfect.
SPEAKER_08I've got 10x quote book by Grant Cardone here, and uh I just this one I think is fitting. It's it's called the 10x potential, right? Success lies in the gap between where you are and your potential. So that's the 10x potential quote. So and what I'm gonna actually give you a 10x quote. Ooh. Right. So this has you know a lot of great quotes in there given to you, guys. There we go. I need to put number 83 on that though. I'm gonna put number 83 on that. Exactly.
SPEAKER_04I can't why didn't you put KD 83?
SPEAKER_08I mean Yeah. 83. So yeah, we're gonna let you take that with you, and I'm also gonna let you launch out of here with a 10x hat. Ooh, that's a good thing. Yeah. So we've got to hook you up proper on that. Grant Codone representing there for you, right? We'll get Grant to a game to make sure. Yeah, he's yeah. I'll actually be seeing him July 24th through the 26th this month. Be down there in Miami. Oh.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah, yeah. Got an event going down there with him. So yes. Well, hey, everyone, our followers and listeners, thank you, KD83, Kyle Dixon, for being here today. Local hometown hero. Oh, yeah. Mid Illinois, Illinois hero, right? Yeah. The name is known throughout the cornfields now, right? That's right. That's great. I love it.
